Dallas, Texas — Dallas police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old father and amateur boxer who was killed Sunday afternoon in southeast Dallas. Family members say the victim was unarmed when he was shot, as loved ones and members of the local boxing community mourn his death.
According to the Dallas Police Department, officers responded to a shooting call around 4:15 p.m. in the 100 block of South Murdeaux Lane. When officers arrived, they found Matthew Moore, 25, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Moore was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said.
Police Investigation Ongoing, No Arrest Made
As of Monday, investigators had not released details about what led up to the shooting. Police confirmed that no arrests have been made, and the case remains under active investigation.
Authorities have not said whether a suspect has been identified or if the shooting stemmed from an argument or other confrontation. Detectives continue to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses.
Family Says Moore Was Unarmed
Moore’s father, Matthew Moore Sr., said his son did not have a weapon at the time he was shot. The family is calling for answers as they struggle to understand how the incident unfolded.
Loved ones say Moore was not involved in criminal activity and was focused on building a future for himself and his young daughter.
Boxing Community Remembers a Dedicated Athlete
On Monday, family members, friends, and fellow athletes gathered at Chapa’s Boxing Gym in Rockwall to honor Moore’s life and legacy.
Moore trained at the gym for years and was widely respected for his work ethic and attitude. His longtime coach, Pete Chapa, described him as a fighter who motivated everyone around him.
“Matt as an athlete, he’s just a coach’s dream,” Chapa said. “Matt worked hard and he inspired everyone he was around.”
Remembered as a Devoted Father
Beyond the boxing ring, Moore was remembered most as a devoted father. According to Chapa, Moore often brought his 5-year-old daughter to the gym while training, keeping her close as he worked toward his goals.
“Every other time he was in this gym, he brought his daughter with him,” Chapa said. “She was trailing him all the time.”
Friends say Moore balanced training, fatherhood, and work while staying focused on creating a better life for his family.
Faith Helps Family Cope With Loss
As grief filled the gym, Chapa said faith has helped Moore’s loved ones cope with the sudden loss.
“We’re believers. We’re strong in our faith,” he said. “We believe God’s in control, and we’re going to be okay.”
Family members echoed those sentiments, saying Moore’s faith and determination shaped how he lived — and how he is being remembered.
Community Seeks Justice and Answers
The shooting has shaken the southeast Dallas community and raised questions about violence affecting young families. Residents and friends are urging anyone with information to come forward so Moore’s family can get answers.
Police encourage witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact detectives as the investigation continues.
