$50,000 lottery win helps friends launch business in Delmar

DELMAR, Md. — Two best friends from the Eastern Shore, who were in the early stages of planning their own fiberglass repair and fabrication business, received an unexpected financial boost when one of them won $50,000 on a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket.

Matthew Robinson, a Delmar resident, scored the top prize on a $5 Gold Bar Bingo 5th Edition ticket, with some encouragement from his best friend and workmate, Brian Brown. The two friends were already looking to purchase a work van for their new venture when they decided to try their luck with lottery tickets during a stop at the Exxon station on Ocean Highway.

“We were already looking at a work van,” Robinson said, emphasizing that the timing of the win was perfect for their business plans. “This came at the perfect time!” he added.

Although Robinson has only occasionally played Lottery games, his friend Brown is a more seasoned player who regularly tries his luck on various games, including Racetrax and scratch-offs. After Brown put in some money, Robinson joined him in buying tickets at the station. They scratched their tickets later at home, and Robinson’s turned out to be a top-prize winner.

“I never expected this to happen,” Robinson remarked about the win. The two friends are eager to move forward with their business plans and use the prize money to support their families.

The Exxon station in Delmar also benefits from the friends’ good fortune, earning a $500 Lottery bonus for selling the winning ticket.
