Morning commute disrupted by crashes, delays across New Jersey highways

Newark, New Jersey. Due to collisions, car problems, and high traffic volumes, morning commuters in New Jersey experienced considerable interruptions on a number of key roads on Tuesday.

As of 8:00 a.m., a collision south of Exit 60 close to I-195/NJ 129 in Hamilton Township had closed the left shoulder on I-295 northbound. The right shoulder had to be closed farther north in Bordentown Township due to a car that had fallen off the road close to Exit 57.

Congestion at the busy crossing was exacerbated just before 8:00 a.m. when a disabled car on the George Washington Bridge upper-level toll plaza westbound stopped the right lane in Fort Lee. For drivers heading from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, delays at the lower and upper eastbound levels of the George Washington Bridge also surpassed 40 minutes.

The right shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike has been shut since 5:44 a.m. due to an overturned tractor-trailer on the western spur northbound exit ramp at Interchange 15W close to I-280 in Kearny, among other noteworthy accidents. Additionally, as of 6:22 a.m., lane shifts were occurring in both directions on US 9 near County Road 547 in Lakewood Township due to a downed power pole and traffic signal.

The Lincoln Tunnel experienced significant delays, with both the center and south tunnels taking up to 30 minutes to drive east from the New Jersey Turnpike Exit 16E. Eastbound travel times for the Holland Tunnel were 30 minutes from New Jersey Route 139 at Tonnelle Circle and 35 minutes from Turnpike Exit 14C.
