The Tragic Incident
The tragedy happened early on July 1, 2023, while 25-year-old Marvin Redondo-Funes and his family were on their way from New York to Florida. Redondo-Funes reportedly slowed to a crawl at one or two miles per hour as they traveled on Interstate 95 across the state line into Florida in order to get a picture of the famous Welcome to Florida sign.
Redondo-Funes was hit at full speed by a car that was following it and failed to notice the slowdown in time. Four children were placed in the car’s backseat, despite the fact that it was only intended to hold three people. Sadly, only one of the youngsters was buckled up. The fourth child was taken to the hospital and passed away two days later, while the other three perished at the scene.
The driver of the other car, Redondo-Funes, and his girlfriend were all lucky to escape with only minor injuries.
Arrest and Charges
Redondo-Funes was taken into custody and transported to Florida on November 2, 2024, when he was checked into Nassau County Jail. Four counts of aggravated homicide of a child and driving with a suspended or revoked license causing serious bodily injury are among the numerous charges against him. These accusations are related to the crash that killed his family members.
Redondo-Funes is expected to appear in court on December 6, 2024, and is being held on a $270,016 bond.
