Thanksgiving closures and service changes announced in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. On Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, District Government offices and services will mark Thanksgiving by closing some of their locations and modifying their operations around the city.

Emergency assistance, such as hypothermia and low-barrier shelters for homeless people, will continue to be available. The Downtown Day Services Center will serve food and services to walk-in clients, and shelters like the Pat Handy Women’s Shelter and the New York Avenue Men’s Shelter will be open around-the-clock. Other crisis services related to behavioral health will continue to be available, including the DC Stabilization Center.

The collections for food waste, recycling, and trash that were originally planned for Thursday will now take place on Friday. All other collections will move one day later through Saturday. While outdoor parks and playgrounds will be open on both days, recreation facilities, public libraries, and the majority of District offices will be closed. With the exception of towing and ticketing for streetcars, parking enforcement will be suspended.

Additionally, DMV offices and district public schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Regular business will resume the following week. Reversible lane operations and the majority of non-emergency construction activities will be suspended for the vacation, according to the Department of Transportation.
