From Sword to Standoff
On Thursday night, residents in the neighborhood around Boland Avenue, which is about 40 miles north of Tampa, reported to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office that a man was threatening the safety of children in the vicinity by brandishing a sword.
When responding deputies arrived to perform a welfare check, they first spoke with the individual, who was still inside his home.
Critical Moments Captured
When the man, whose identity has not been revealed, came out of his house wielding a gun rather than the alleged sword, the scene became more heated.
The pivotal moments shortly before 8:30 PM are captured on body-worn camera film, which shows cops ordering the subject to down his firearm. When these commands were ignored, a deputy pulled out a gun and hit the person.
Investigation and Recovery
Deputies promptly gave the injured subject medical attention in accordance with department practice, and he was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The handgun and the sword that was first reported were found at the scene. As is customary in any incident involving a deputy, the investigation has been taken over by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Until the conclusion of the investigation, the deputy who fired their firearm has been placed on paid administrative leave.
