Ramsey County man pleads guilty to carjacking and illegal firearm possession

The city of Minneapolis U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger announced that Ricardo Rydell Walker, Jr., 21, of Ramsey County, entered a guilty plea to counts of illegal firearm possession and carjacking in federal court.

According to court records, Walker was involved in a violent carjacking of a black 2021 Toyota Highlander on June 30, 2022. As the victim tried to flee, Walker and other individuals confronted them, tripped them, and then used a firearm to hit them in the head. Walker was taken into custody on July 6 in Maplewood, Minnesota, less than a week later, while in possession of a 9mm Springfield Hellcat handgun and a stolen vehicle.

Walker acknowledged helping to facilitate the carjacking of a gray 2015 Mazda 3 and a black 2019 Volkswagen Atlas in 2021, as well as a gray Nissan Rogue on June 24, 2024, in addition to the Toyota Highlander. Walker and his associates intimidated their victims and forcibly seized cars in each instance using weapons.

Walker further broke federal law when he entered a guilty plea to receiving a handgun while facing a felony prosecution. He came to file his plea before Katherine M. Menendez, the U.S. District Judge.

Numerous law enforcement organizations participated in the investigation, including the FBI, the St. Paul Police Department, the Minneapolis Police Department, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mary Riverso and William C. Mattessich.

Walker’s sentencing has not yet been set, but he risks a lengthy jail sentence for his role in the violent carjackings and firearm-related offenses.
