CALUMET COUNTY, WIWhen a fire destroyed a family’s house in Chilton, Wisconsin, leaving them with little more than the clothing on their backs, Thanksgiving took a tragic turn. A man was stuck inside as the fire advanced swiftly, and before firemen could get him, he had to take cover on the roof. The family had to spend the holiday season without a house or belongings due to the severe damage.
A Night of Devastation in Chilton
The Chilton Fire Department received a call regarding a house fire at 1221 Fox Street shortly before 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving. The side of the house was on fire when firefighters arrived, and dense smoke was rising from the structure.
While evaluating the situation, they noticed a man in dire need of assistance on the second-floor window. He had to ascend to the roof due to the heat and smoke, and firefighters used a ladder to rescue him.
Swift Response and Rescue Efforts
When the fire department promptly requested more help, the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System was activated. In order to help control the fire and provide support, firefighters from eight nearby departments, as well as many medical services and police enforcement, hurried to the scene.
Firefighters managed to contain the fire within half an hour, preventing it from spreading to the second storey. But even if they acted quickly, the house suffered devastating damage.
Family Devastated, But Supported
The family’s only possessions after the fire were their clothes. The family only has the clothing on their backs, and the house is completely destroyed, explained Fire Chief Ben Schoenborn. During this trying period, the Red Cross has stepped in to help the family. Other dogs suffered from smoke inhalation, and sadly, one of the family’s cats died in the fire. Officials think the incident was accidental, but the cause is still being investigated.
The family’s loss will always be a part of this Thanksgiving, but because of the brave work of the Chilton Fire Department and other local organizations, they are getting the help they require as they start the challenging process of starting over.
