An Army soldier stationed at Fort Liberty is facing serious charges that could result in a lengthy prison sentence. The U.S. Department of Justice revealed on Monday that the soldier is accused of engaging in illegal gun trafficking and providing false information to the government.
According to prosecutors, Kai Liam Nix, also known as Kai Brazelton, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on Aug. 14. The charges against Nix include unlawful firearms trafficking, which involves the sale of two stolen firearms.
The 20-year-old active-duty soldier is additionally alleged to have provided false information to the government regarding his past involvement with insurrectionist groups. He was taken into custody on August 15th and had his initial court hearing on Monday.
Court documents reveal that Nix allegedly provided false information on his security clearance application standard form. Specifically, he claimed that he had no affiliation with any group that advocated for the use of violence or force to overthrow the U.S. government, according to a news release.
Prosecutors have also charged Nix with one count of dealing in firearms without a license and two counts of selling a stolen firearm. If found guilty, he could potentially be sentenced to up to 30 years behind bars.
“A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors,” the news release stated.
