Driver arrested in May crash that killed D.C. woman on Briggs Chaney Road

GAITHERSBURG, MDA A Silver Spring woman has been taken into custody and charged in relation to a crash earlier this year on Briggs Chaney Road that killed a woman from Washington, D.C.

Following an investigation by the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, 27-year-old Jovannie T. McCarthy was arrested on Sunday. McCarthy is accused by authorities of operating the 2006 Honda Accord that resulted in the fatal collision on May 8.

According to the police, the collision happened at around 12:44 a.m. when McCarthy’s car crossed both lanes of traffic as it was leaving the westbound MD 200 onto Briggs Chaney Road and collided with an eastbound 2023 Volkswagen.

Kiara Cheeks, 35, of Washington, D.C., was a passenger in the Volkswagen who was fatally injured in the collision. She was taken to a nearby hospital but was later declared dead.

Police have charged McCarthy with criminally negligent manslaughter by car, but they have not revealed any other underlying violations.

McCarthy’s arrest, according to police, is a major step forward in the months-long probe into the deadly collision.
