Prosecutor’s office investigates after two dead in Monmouth County traffic incidents involving pedestrian and bicyclist

NJT, FREEHOLDMonmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago said on Sunday that a pedestrian and a cyclist were killed in two separate traffic incidents that occurred in Howell and West Long Branch on Saturday night.

The first occurrence happened in Howell Township on November 30 just before 7:45 p.m. A 2016 Honda CR-V driven by a 58-year-old Howell resident struck a 71-year-old pedestrian at the intersection of U.S. Route 9 and Strickland Road, prompting police to respond. The motorist stayed on the scene to assist police, and the victim was declared dead at the spot.

Following a report of a bicycle being struck, police in West Long Branch were called to the intersection of State Route 36 and Monmouth Road at around 9 p.m. Shortly after being taken to Monmouth Medical Center, the victim, a 55-year-old Long Branch resident, was declared dead. The 18-year-old driver of the 2018 Range Rover, who lived in Tinton Falls, also stayed on the scene.

Authorities are currently investigating both cases and have not yet stated if any charges will be brought.
