El Cielo, located near the intersection of 12th Street and National Avenue, had been owned by Ruben Albanil Coyolt for nine years. But the episode that sparked the bar’s closure started in October when bullets were fired and police were summoned. During their inquiry, authorities later discovered a number of items that raised grave questions regarding the bar’s operations.
Police Findings Raise Questions
Police found a number of concerning objects inside the tavern on October 18. Cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and a suspected drug sales ledger were among them. Officers also discovered 9-millimeter cartridges, which suggests that firearms were present.
Strangest of all, they also found a number of chickens in the establishment’s basement. The bar’s basement obviously did not comply with Milwaukee law, which allows residents to keep chickens in an outdoor coop with a special permit.

Jose Perez, the council president, also voiced disappointment, pointing up the bar’s problematic past in the neighborhood. The Council decided that the problems with the bar were too serious to overlook, and they decided to cancel Coyolt’s tavern license in spite of his defense and justifications.
After his tavern license was revoked, Coyolt’s lawyer, Vince Bobot, talked about the potential for a court appeal. The bar’s operation in the neighborhood was terminated, nonetheless, when it was decided not to pursue additional legal action.
The Fate of the Chickens
The chicks were brought to the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control after being confiscated by Milwaukee police. The second chicken was given back to Coyolt, but the other, in worse shape, was put down.
