Houston, TexasAfter reportedly shooting his 20-year-old son with Down syndrome to death and trying to burn the body in what investigators say was a startling attempt to destroy evidence, the Texas attorney is now charged with murder.

Claims of a Horrible Accident

On Monday, December 2, Michael C. Howard called the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office to report that he had unintentionally shot his son, Mark Howard, the previous evening. Howard claims that he thought his son was an intruder and that the incident was a terrible accident.

However, authorities claim that the subsequent occurrences cast doubt on Howard’s story. According to the sheriff’s office, Howard allegedly used a backhoe tractor to relocate his son’s body to a distant area of the property. According to investigators, he then allegedly cremated the body by placing it on a trash pile and setting it on fire.

Evidence Found at the Scene

A search warrant was carried out on Howard’s property by law officials, including the Texas Rangers. Bones and burned body parts were found at the scene.

According to the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office, all of the bones showed signs of having been burned, and the area where they were discovered was covered in a lot of ash and soot. For additional examination, the remains have been forwarded to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

A shotgun that Howard allegedly claimed to have used during the incident was also found during the investigation. When Mark Howard led deputies to the location where he claimed the body had been burned, they were able to find him after first searching the land and nearby buildings.
