LAREDO, TX Earlier this week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers found 21 pounds of anabolic steroids hidden in a U.S. citizen’s car, marking a big drug arrest at the Texas border. The seizure highlights how difficult it is for law enforcement to stop the illegal trafficking of prohibited narcotics.

Driver Referred for Secondary Inspection

On Tuesday, December 3, a 25-year-old American driver of a 2012 GMC Terrain was pulled over by CBP authorities at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge in Laredo, Texas. Officers referred the driver and her car for further investigation during a regular inspection.

Officers found 4,760 pills and 10 vials of testosterone and other anabolic drugs concealed inside the car using a canine squad and non-intrusive inspection technologies. The compounds weighed 21 pounds in all.

Anabolic Steroids: A Controlled Substance

Because of their potential for abuse, anabolic steroids are strictly restricted as Schedule III substances under the Controlled Substances Act. Although certain types of these medications are authorized for particular veterinary or medical uses, it is against the law to distribute or possess them without authorization.

In a statement, Port Director Alberto Flores of the Laredo Port of Entry said, “Our frontline CBP officers maintain strict vigilance and their application of inspections experience and technology led to the discovery of a significant amount of steroids deeply hidden within a vehicle.”

Large amounts of steroids are uncommon, and this seizure demonstrates CBP’s dedication to protecting our border and preventing the abuse and commercialization of these restricted narcotics.

Investigation Underway

CBP authorities confiscated the car and the steroids. Special agents from Homeland Security Investigations have taken the motorist into custody and opened a criminal investigation.

CBP officials keep stressing how crucial border security is and how cutting-edge technology may be used to intercept illicit drugs. In order to protect the public’s health, the agency works to stop the trafficking and misuse of controlled substances.
