Putnam County, In Mahopac, New York, a 76-year-old woman was rescued Tuesday after her vehicle crashed into the freezing waters of the West Branch Reservoir. The woman who was trapped inside the partially flooded car was quickly saved by first responders.

First Responders Spring Into Action

The incident at Washington Road was reported to the Carmel Police Department. Officers Palmiero and Lash arrived on the scene first and made a fast assessment of the situation. They jumped right in to the freezing water to pull the driver out. EMS units, the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department’s Dive Team, and members of the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department quickly came to help.

Officials said the woman was not hurt throughout the encounter, but as a precaution, she was taken to a local hospital for a medical assessment.

Environmental and Safety Concerns Addressed

To assess any possible risks to the reservoir, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection was also sent. Following the accident, protecting the water supply was of utmost importance.
