Indiana parents charged after toddler dies after being left in closet with space heater

BERNE, INDIA. The Berne Police Department reports that two parents have been arrested and charged with abuse after their 2-year-old daughter was discovered dead from hyperthermia in a closet that had been heated by a space heater late last month.

Following the terrible event, which took place between the evening of November 26 and the afternoon of November 27, 21-year-old Sintia Perez and 23-year-old Jace Hirschy are charged with one act of neglect resulting in death and two counts of neglect of a dependent.

On the afternoon of November 27, police were summoned to the Swiss Meadows apartment complex in Berne, which is approximately 35 miles south of Fort Wayne. Officers described the house as being in poor condition, with insects, unclean beds, and trash all over the place. Police observed excrement in a corner of the closet where the infant was discovered, and the child’s crib bedding was described as being extremely dirty.

Temperatures in the apartment ranged from 84 to 109 degrees, and investigators reported feeling a noticeable difference in temperature when they entered the closet compared to the main bedroom. An autopsy revealed that the girl’s death was due to hyperthermia, with her body temperature reaching 109.4 degrees.

Hirschy and Perez are still being held while the inquiry is ongoing.
