Florida authorities have announced formal charges against a mother in connection with the death of her 3-year-old twins. However, the charges do not include murder.
A 43-year-old woman named Shirlene N. Alcime is currently facing an aggravated manslaughter case, as reported by NBC Miami affiliate WTVJ. Miami-Dade police responded to an incident on I-95 on Feb. 2. According to officers, Alcime made a daring leap from the expressway wall onto the train tracks just as the police arrived at the scene.
Meanwhile, her children, Milendhet and Milendhere Napoleon-Cadet, 3, were discovered in the backseat of a nearby car. They showed no signs of response, exhibited foaming at the mouth, and were declared deceased shortly thereafter. Fortunately, their mother made it through.
Alcime denied providing her children with anything that would contribute to their condition. However, she acknowledged that her family was facing severe financial difficulties and expressed concern that her kids would be left without a stable home if left alone with their father.
According to reports, she claimed to have taken the children to McDonald’s and Chuck E. Cheese on that particular day, stating that she wanted the twins to enjoy themselves.
According to officers, the defendant confessed to considering a tragic act involving the victims and the bridge.
Authorities had previously hinted at the potential for murder charges, but they refrained from immediately pursuing homicide charges as they were still in the midst of conducting their preliminary investigation.
As of now, the toxicology screenings on the children have not been completed. Law&Crime has contacted prosecutors to obtain further details regarding the cause of death of Milendhet and Milendhere.
Alcime, who was hospitalized after the incident, appeared in court on Friday in a wheelchair, as reported by WTVJ. She was already in jail for aggravated child neglect with bodily harm, and she has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
