Tampa, Florida.Just hours after President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Damascus fell, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that U.S. Air Force jets conducted a series of attacks against 75 Islamic State targets in central Syria on Sunday.
The coordinated operation targeted ISIS leaders, members, and training camps with B-52 bombers, F-15 fighter jets, and A-10 aircraft. CENTCOM stressed that the mission’s objective was to stop ISIS from taking advantage of Syria’s current instability. General Michael Erik Kurilla, head of CENTCOM, stated in a statement that there should be no question that we will not permit ISIS to reorganize and exploit the current circumstances in Syria.
The attacks, which occurred in the void left by Assad’s overthrow, are a component of the United States’ continuous effort to dismantle, weaken, and eventually destroy the Islamic State. CENTCOM said battle damage assessments are ongoing and that there were no civilian deaths from the operation.
The goal of the roughly 900 American soldiers still stationed in Syria is to prevent ISIS from becoming a powerful force again. When necessary, the U.S. uses a network of air assets positioned in nearby nations to hit high-value targets.
The operation on Sunday represents a major step forward in efforts to stop ISIS from taking advantage of the fall of the Assad regime, which was overthrown early Sunday by a coalition of opposition forces. Although CENTCOM has pledged to hold accountable any organizations that assist or work with ISIS, ISIS is not a part of the coalition that took over Damascus and forced Assad to flee to Russia.
