MIAMI, FLA: A man who resisted a U.S. Coast Guard rescue attempt in Biscayne Bay was given a three-month sentence in federal prison. Jeremie Calo was involved in the August 2022 incident, where he spent hours avoiding authorities in a strange series of events that resulted in criminal accusations.

The Rescue Attempt in Biscayne Bay

Just south of South Beach in Miami’s Biscayne Bay, Jeremie Calo and five other people were on a small boat when the event started. Court filings state that safety concerns prompted the Coast Guard to approach the ship.

The boat’s location presented further safety concerns, and none of the passengers were wearing life jackets. In order to transport them to a nearby sailboat, the Coast Guard officials gave the order for everyone to exit and transfer to a neighboring rescue boat.

Calo disobeyed the Coast Guard’s orders, but the other five passengers did. According to the prosecution, Coast Guard officials had to physically take him from the ship and move him to the Coast Guard boat.

Calo s Resistance and Evading Rescue

Calo aggressively avoided many rescue attempts by swimming around the bay after jumping off the Coast Guard ship rather than participating. He resisted attempts by law authorities and the Coast Guard to help him for more than two hours.

Calo persisted in avoiding capture throughout this period, even thwarting an officer’s attempts to assist him in getting back onto the Coast Guard boat using physical force. Calo allegedly slapped an assisting officer’s hands away, making the rescue effort even more difficult, according to the prosecution.
