Philadelphia man convicted of first-degree murder in 2021 Cobbs Creek shooting

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Rodrick Williams, 25, was found guilty by a Philadelphia jury of first-degree murder and associated firearm charges for the April 2021 shooting death of 21-year-old Michael Mines in the neighborhood of Cobbs Creek.

On the 600 block of South 55th Street on April 6, 2021, Mines was sitting in a car when Williams shot him several times in the head. First responders declared Mines dead at the scene. Using information retrieved from his mobile phone, Instagram account, and ballistic analysis of the.22 caliber gun used in the shooting, prosecutors connected Williams—who authorities claim is a member of a violent street group—to the crime.

Although detectives discovered no evidence linking Mines, who had no known affiliations to street organizations, to the brother’s murder, they believe Williams’ motivation for the killing was retribution for his brother’s gunshot death.

The Honorable Glenn Bronson gave Williams a life sentence without the possibility of release on December 5, 2024. Williams is also facing trial for three non-fatal shootings and another homicide.

In a statement, District Attorney Larry Krasner stated, “This conviction is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of the Philadelphia Police Department and our Gun Violence Task Force.” Williams is obviously a threat to public safety, and this decision guarantees that he will be held accountable for taking a young man’s life.
