According to internet records, a Wisconsin man who staged his own death and abandoned his wife and three children has been placed under arrest. Although there are currently no charges against Ryan Borgwardt, 45, he was taken into custody at the Green Lake County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.
A Shocking Disappearance and Elaborate Escape Plan
Borgwardt staged his drowning on Wisconsin’s Green Lake, which is renowned for its depth, in the middle of August. He flipped his kayak, threw away his cell phone, and then rowed an inflatable boat to shore.
His subsequent actions were anything but typical. Before taking a bus to Detroit and then on to Canada, Borgwardt rode an electric bike for roughly 70 miles through the night to Madison. He then took a plane to Eastern Europe, where he was unreachable for a number of months.
After Borgwardt vanished, a costly search was conducted to find his body, which sparked a months-long investigation. The search took more than a month, much longer than Borgwardt had expected, and cost authorities more than $35,000. At first, he thought the search would be over in two weeks.
Communicating with Authorities and a Possible Obstruction Charge
When Borgwardt started interacting with authorities in November, he reappeared. He clarified that his choice to stage his death was motivated by personal issues, but he did not promise to return to Wisconsin. Officials had been trying to get him to go back home, claiming that Borgwardt might be charged with hindering the inquiry into his abduction.
The specific charges that Borgwardt might be facing have not yet been made public by authorities. More information is likely to be released at a press conference this morning.
In Custody and Awaiting Further Updates
Borgwardt was jailed earlier this week and is presently being held at the Green Lake County Jail. There are currently no charges against him in the jail files. According to the sheriff’s office, more information will be released at the press conference later today. The matter has drawn a lot of attention, and authorities are still looking into it.
