As part of an ongoing effort to evaluate the possible threats posed by the drones, Sheriff Mastronardy joined Rep. Smith, who thinks the activity might come from offshore, possibly from a ship-based source connected to a foreign country like China. Citing instances like the Chinese surveillance balloon found in American airspace last year, the senator has expressed concerns about national security risks.
It is understandable that this important and recurrent problem has New Jersey citizens extremely concerned, and Smith stated in a statement Monday night that the lackadaisical response from our state and federal agencies thus far is completely unacceptable. In order to handle the increasing prevalence of unmanned aerial systems, he underlined the necessity of improved coordination and communication between federal partners and local law enforcement.
Smith said that in order to move the inquiry along more quickly, he has communicated with the sheriffs of Ocean County and Monmouth County in addition to federal organizations like the Department of Homeland Security and US military troops. He urged state and federal authorities to take immediate, decisive measures to locate the drones’ source and reassure the people.
Smith emphasized his dedication to finding answers, even if authorities have not yet identified the drones’ origin or purpose. “Until New Jersey residents receive the thorough answers they deserve, I will keep working around the clock to make sure law enforcement has all the resources and authority needed to identify these unmanned aerial systems,” he added.
