Baltimore, Maryland According to the Baltimore Police Department, a 61-year-old man has been taken into custody in relation to a string of arsons that recently took place in the city’s Central District.
Bernard Stepney was named by investigators as the suspect in the deliberate burning of mailboxes on the 400 block of Cathedral Street and the 300 block of West Mulberry Street, as well as other incidents on the 500 block of East Baltimore Street, East Fayette Street, and West Franklin Street.
Investigators examined security footage and collected tangible evidence that connected Stepney to the incidents. After issuing an arrest warrant, a Central District patrol officer found and apprehended Stepney without incident on December 3 at around 8:30 p.m.
Stepney faces charges of first-degree malicious burning, second-degree arson, and other fire-related felonies. Central District officers, the Baltimore City and County Hazardous Device Team, Howard County Fire Marshals K-9, ATF, BCIC, and the Baltimore City Fire Investigation Bureau worked together as a multi-agency team to make his arrest possible.
