MAA’s Berkshire County After getting separated from his brother while hunting earlier this month, a 78-year-old man suffering from dementia was rescued from the Lee, Massachusetts, woods. A thorough search effort in challenging terrain preceded the rescue.
The Search for the Missing Hunter
Around 6 a.m. on December 3, the old hunter and his brother went into the woods with the intention of meeting again before nightfall. At around 3 p.m., the brother reported his sibling missing to the authorities after the two failed to meet as planned.
Because he possessed a radio instead of a cell phone, the lost hunter was able to communicate with rescuers on and off. His whereabouts were unknown despite this scant communication, which led to a thorough search.
A Coordinated Rescue Operation
To help with the search, Massachusetts State Police (MSP) sent out its Air Wing’s Air 4 team from Lawrence Air Base. Despite the difficult circumstances, the crew found the hunter quickly using thermal imaging technology. The crew locates him minutes after deploying the equipment, according to a video that MSP provided.
With the help of the Air 4 crew, ground searchers made their way through difficult terrain and arrived at the hunter just after 8 p.m. The man had been out in the weather for fifteen hours by that point. Thankfully, no major injuries were recorded, and he was discovered unharmed.
