Jury sworn in for first trial of 2019 Santa Cruz County kidnapping and killing of cannabis entrepreneur

Santa Cruz The jury was sworn in Wednesday afternoon for the first of four cases involving the murder of Pleasure Point cannabis entrepreneur Tushar Atre.

The 26-year-old defendant Stephen Lindsay faces charges of murder, carjacking, burglary, two counts of robbery, and two counts of kidnapping. Lindsay and his alleged co-conspirators Joshua Camps, Kurtis Charters, and Kaleb Charters were accused by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office of breaking into the home of Atre, Lindsay’s former employer, robbing him, kidnapping him, and shooting him dead early on October 1, 2019.

Judge Stephen Siegel of the Santa Cruz County Superior Court gave the jury, which consists of 12 jurors and 5 alternates, conduct guidelines on Wednesday. Of the group, seven males and ten women were chosen as jurors. The group won’t meet again until January 6th, when the defense and prosecution make their opening statements.

Defense lawyers succeeded in their attempts to have the four co-defendants put on separate trials after almost four years of court proceedings. A jury panel is anticipated to be called in mid-March, and Camps, 28, is tentatively set to go on trial. A scheduling hearing for brothers Kurtis and Kaleb Charters is scheduled for Friday morning.
