Murphy Administration Blames Increased Traffic Deaths on Reduced State Police Enforcement

Trenton, New Jersey. Concerns over the possible effects on public safety, such as an increase in traffic accidents and fatalities, have been raised by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin’s announcement of a formal investigation into an alleged reduction in State Police traffic enforcement from July 2023 to March 2024.

Platkin said in a statement issued on Wednesday that the accusations constituted a grave betrayal of public confidence and might damage the State Police’s standing.

He has ordered a thorough investigation to ascertain how the stoppage was orchestrated and to guarantee responsibility. “I am deeply disappointed that this well-deserved reputation for serving the public good has been tainted,” Platkin added.

Platkin appointed former Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara as Special Counsel to oversee the investigation. Bharara, who is currently a partner at WilmerHale, will be in charge of the inquiry from the Attorney General’s office. While retaining the last say on the matter, Platkin voiced confidence in Bharara’s ability to follow any lead without fear or favor.

Given that the alleged slowness may have coincided with an increase in traffic incidents, the probe comes as New Jersey struggles with increased concerns about roadway safety. In spite of this, Platkin emphasized continued cooperation with the State Police and other organizations to sustain advancements on important public safety projects, such as record-low gun violence, decreased auto theft, and increased measures to stop drug and human trafficking.

In a different statement, Bharara reaffirmed his dedication to carrying out an exhaustive and impartial investigation, promising to maintain accountability and impartiality throughout the inquiry.
