MINEOLA, N.Y. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that a Hempstead man had been sentenced to 17 years to life in prison for his involvement in the November 2021 attempted robbery and deadly shooting of a 24-year-old man in Uniondale.
In September, Khamari Elie, 20, entered a guilty plea to several crimes, including possession of weapons, attempted first-degree robbery, and second-degree murder. According to the prosecution, Elie and three accomplices planned to rob Kyle Midtlyng while pretending that he was buying marijuana, which ultimately led to the victim’s demise.
Co-defendant Tariq Pitaud enticed Midtlyng to Uniondale’s Alexander Avenue on the evening of November 10, 2021, claiming that she was purchasing marijuana. Tyrel Cason Jr. and co-defendants Kyle Colthirst were driven to the spot by Elie, and it was then that Colthirst got into Midtlyng’s vehicle and carried out the heist. Midtlyng was fatally wounded when Colthirst shot him in the right side during the altercation.
After police responded to a 911 call, they discovered Midtlyng lying outside his car in the middle of the road. At the scene, he was declared dead. DNA from blood droplets on the sidewalk, a shell casing discovered in the victim’s vehicle, and GPS information from an electronic monitoring device Colthirst was wearing that located him at the location were all pieces of evidence connecting him to the crime.
Following a trial earlier this year, Colthirst, 20, was found guilty of second-degree murder, attempted robbery, and possession of weapons. In April, he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
According to a statement from Nassau County DA Anne T. Donnelly, Khamari Elie and his associates enticed Kyle Midtlyng to Uniondale in order to rob him, which ultimately led to the young man’s untimely and terrible demise. The seriousness of this defendant’s acts and his involvement in Kyle’s death are reflected in the sentence he received today.
