North Carolina man charged with attempted murder in New Jersey Turnpike road rage shooting

New Jersey’s Mansfield Township. Authorities said Thursday that a man from North Carolina has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly fired several shots at another car during a road rage incident on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The defendant, 34-year-old Brandon Rudd of South Mills, North Carolina, is charged with shooting at a Cadillac Escalade from his Nissan Altima late on October 31, 2024, while the two cars were heading south in Burlington County close to milepost 48.3. According to the New Jersey State Police, the victim’s car was hit several times, but no one was hurt.

Through their investigation, detectives were able to identify Rudd and his car, and they collaborated with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) in North Carolina to find him. Rudd was captured in South Mills, North Carolina, on November 8.

The pistol used in the shooting, as well as ballistics evidence that authorities claim matched the Turnpike event, were recovered as a result of search warrants conducted at his home and cars.

Rudd is charged with several offenses, including possession of a firearm, aggravated assault, attempted murder, and unlawful use of a firearm. While awaiting extradition to New Jersey, he is presently being detained at the Albemarle District Jail in North Carolina.

The Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the case.
