On December 10, 2024, a local man was stranded in the muck at Summersville Lake because of its low water levels, leading to a dramatic rescue in Summersville, West Virginia (NICHOLAS COUNTY, WVA). Several local fire agencies had to coordinate their reaction to the event, which happened close to the south side of Hughes Bridge.

Rescue Efforts Begin in Difficult Conditions

The call was answered Tuesday night by the Summersville Fire Department. According to fire officials, the person entered the lake but was trapped in the mud, which was exposed by the abnormally low water level.

Rescuers had limited alternatives for securely removing the man after their initial attempts to get him from the sea failed owing to the dangerous conditions.

A Coordinated Rescue Operation

Given the intricacy of the situation, the Fayette County vertical rescue team and the Wilderness Fire Department were asked to provide extra support.

Responders used a hoist system from the overhead bridge to complete the rescue, and in order to give the operation enough room, Route 19 northbound was briefly closed. A rescue litter and ropes were used to lower the crew to the trapped individual, who was then securely hoisted to the bridge.

Gratitude for Teamwork and Assistance

The Summersville Fire Department conveyed their gratitude for everyone’s cooperation and prompt action.

“We would like to thank everyone who came to assist in this call,” they wrote in a Facebook post. We are extremely fortunate to have excellent partners in our area who can be called upon at any time.
