Arlington Heights Police and Fire responded to a complaint of a burning garbage truck on Derbyshire Avenue, just south of Euclid Avenue, at around 4 p.m. on Friday. Emergency personnel had just reached the location when the explosion happened.
According to municipal officials, the post-blast concussion and flying debris injured one firefighter and two police officers. After being promptly taken to a nearby hospital, the injured first responders’ injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.

A local citizen posted surveillance footage of the explosion taken from a Ring camera. A strong shockwave is seen in the video, followed by a huge smoke and flame plume. Numerous roadways were littered with flying debris, resulting in significant damage.
Officials said the blast was big. Parts of trucks were launched into the air and landed streets away. Significant property damage was caused in the nearby vicinity by a shock wave.
Parts of the siding and roofs of several nearby homes were blown off, causing damage. Vehicles were damaged, including a fire engine with a smashed windshield, and windows were broken. Additionally, as debris struck a police car, the airbags in the vehicle deployed.
Emergency Response and Cleanup
As the fire continued, first responders from multiple nearby departments quickly arrived to help. While firefighters attempted to contain the fire, local streets were blocked. The truck’s operator, Groot Waste Management Services, dispatched a cleanup team to the location, and at 7:15 p.m., a heavy-duty wrecker arrived to take the vehicle away.
According to NBC Chicago, authorities are still investigating the origin of the explosion, but they believe it was brought on by uncontrolled combustion in the truck’s rubbish pickup hopper, where nearby material fed the flames.
For the impacted residents, Groot’s insurance provider has started the claim procedure. To file for damages, those affected by the explosion should call 913-491-2277 and mention claim number RC15285 to a representative.
By Monday, officials reported the firefighter was back on job and the injured officers were on the mend.
