Authorities in Deltona hurried to find the driver after the terrifying hit-and-run occurred in broad daylight. The teenager is expected to recover despite suffering severe injuries while crossing the street on his way home from school.
The Incident Unfolds in Deltona
The collision happened at the junction of Gage Avenue and Noah Street in Deltona, Florida, on December 19, shortly before 4 p.m.
The 16-year-old youngster was utilizing a crosswalk when he was hit by a black Chevrolet Silverado when he was riding his scooter home from Pine Ridge High School. The adolescent suffered a severe head injury and an arm injury as the collision knocked them to the ground. After the crash, the victim was still aware and alert despite the injuries.
Driver s Attempt to Conceal Identity
The driver, later identified as Sarah Wright, 37, originally pulled over to see how the teen was doing after the collision. But she quickly went back to her truck, taped and papered up the license plate, and drove away.
The suspect’s suspicious behavior was observed by a close witness who had been checking her mailbox at the time of the collision. A Ring camera recorded the truck departing the area, and she was able to remember a portion of the license plate number. This gave authorities vital information that aided in the driver’s capture.
Authorities Act Quickly, Arrest the Suspect
Investigators were able to find the suspect’s car in a matter of minutes by using the incomplete license plate number and a nearby license plate reader camera. With the help of the Florida Highway Patrol and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were able to locate Wright in Flagler County.
She was taken into custody and accused of driving with a suspended license and fleeing the scene of an accident involving injuries. On a $3,500 bond, Wright was taken to the Flagler County Jail.
