Jacksonville, Florida A 21-year-old Florida man is going to jail for a stunning crime that shocked the families of both victims. Michael Gainer III admitted to peeing on the graves of two juvenile homicide victims and ruining their tombstones, and he was given a nine-month prison sentence. His acts, which were documented on social media, have caused indignation and permanently damaged Jacksonville’s Restlawn Memorial Park.
The Crime and Discovery
The graves of Darryl Lundy Jr. and Dari one Flanigan, both victims of gun violence, were discovered to have been vandalized in August at Jacksonville’s historic Restlawn Cemeteries and Cremation Gardens. The murders of 17-year-old Lundy in 2022 and 18-year-old Flanigan in 2019 are still unsolved.
After being informed by the mothers of the victims, who had both recently visited the graves, Jacksonville police found the damage on August 19. During her visit on August 16, one of the mothers, who frequently cleaned her son’s grave, reported no problems. But the next visit showed the startling devastation.
How Michael Gainer Was Caught
Videos of Gainer peeing on the graves and breaking the tombstones went viral on social media, exposing his involvement.
In one video, Gainer is seen urinating and spitting on the tombstone in addition to damaging it with a big rock. Gainer apparently acknowledged the vandalism on a different livestream, saying he did it to elicit a response to his claims.
Gainer was recognized as a result of the social media posts and screenshots that were supplied to the mothers of the victims. When presented with a photo lineup in September, both mothers subsequently verified his identification.
Legal Consequences and Community Reaction
Gainer first entered a not guilty plea to two felony counts of damaging or removing a tomb or monument after his arrest. He did, however, enter a guilty plea and was given a nine-month jail sentence on December 19. He was also placed on probation for 42 months and required to perform 300 hours of community service, which included cleaning cemeteries.
Both memorials were successfully rebuilt, and the damage to Lundy and Flanigan’s graves was remedied, giving the bereaved families some solace.
