New York’s Staten Island.According to authorities, a Staten Island man has been taken into custody and accused in relation to a collision in December that claimed the life of a 64-year-old pedestrian in a hospital parking lot.
At 2:03 p.m. on Thursday, Surija Bajro, 67, of Clifton Avenue, was arrested and charged with failing to exercise due care and failing to yield.
The allegations are related to an incident that happened on December 11 while Bajro was operating a Volkswagen Atlas in the North Campus parking lot of Staten Island University Hospital. According to the authorities, Kathleen Murphy, 64, was walking in a designated crosswalk when Bajro struck her while turning left onto a private lane.
After being taken to Staten Island University Hospital North Campus, Murphy, of Willowbrook Road, was declared deceased.
After the collision, Bajro stayed at the location. The investigation is still ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
