Pennyslvania state trooper caught storing A.I.-generated pornography on work computer

Pennsylvania’s Harrisburg. Authorities stated Wednesday that a corporal in the Pennsylvania State Police has been prosecuted after they found hundreds of pornographic photographs on his work computer, including deepfakes created by artificial intelligence.

Attorney General Michelle Henry said the files were found on the work computer of Stephen M. Kamnik, 38, of Havertown, who was assigned to Troop K in Schwenksville, Montgomery County.

According to investigators, Kamnik created deepfake pornographic synthetic media using artificial intelligence software, which was then saved on the computer with other pornographic content.

Kamnik was accused with misdemeanor misapplication of entrusted property and felony unlawful use of a computer. After turning himself in to the police on Wednesday, he was arraigned and given $1,000 unsecured bail, according to officials.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, Kamnik, a trooper since 2011, is presently on unpaid leave while an investigation is conducted.

The case demonstrates the rising alarm about the improper use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to produce illegal content.
