PHARR, Texas—A big narcotics raid at the Texas-Mexico border has revealed a complex smuggling scheme in which a cargo of tomatillos containing more than $21 million worth of methamphetamine was concealed. On January 8, 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel stopped a large narcotics shipment from entering American streets when they made the discovery at the Pharr International Bridge.

Methamphetamine Found in Tractor-Trailer

On January 8, 2025, CBP agents at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility noticed a tractor-trailer trying to enter the United States from Mexico.

Despite having tomatillos listed as its cargo, the vehicle was chosen for secondary inspection in accordance with standard operating protocols. Officers thoroughly inspected the truck using non-intrusive inspection technology and a canine squad.

A Shocking Discovery: Over 2,300 Pounds of Drugs

When officers looked more closely, they found 398 packages—containing 2,379 pounds of methamphetamine—hidden inside the trailer.

The estimated street value of the narcotics is $21.2 million. The seizure represents a serious setback to efforts to smuggle drugs across the border between the United States and Mexico.

The significance of the seizure was underlined by Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry Port Director Carlos Rodriguez.

“Our vigilant CBP officers continue to thwart these smuggling attempts, ensuring that this massive load of harmful narcotics will not reach American streets,” he stated in a statement.

Homeland Security Investigations is currently conducting a criminal investigation after the methamphetamine and tractor-trailer were seized.
