Muslim Rights Group Urges Gov. Murphy to Pass Immigrant Trust Act to Counter Trump Deportations

NJ’s TrentonIn order to shield the state’s immigrant communities from possible federal crackdowns, the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ (CAIR-NJ) New Jersey chapter is urging Governor Phil Murphy to swiftly enact the Immigrant Trust Act.

CAIR-NJ warned that immigrant families in New Jersey are in grave danger due to the incoming Trump administration’s declared plans to carry out mass deportations and detentions.

According to Nancy Elbassiouny, Government Affairs Manager at CAIR-NJ, protecting immigrants is not only a matter of justice but also essential to maintaining the rich diversity of our communities. Governor Murphy has the chance to set a good example and shield the most vulnerable from these detrimental policies.

In an effort to improve confidence between law enforcement and immigrant communities, the Immigrant Trust Act would prohibit state and local law enforcement from utilizing resources to enforce federal immigration laws.

During his State of the State speech, Governor Murphy recently reaffirmed his commitment to upholding New Jersey’s values; but, as federal immigration threats escalate, CAIR-NJ is calling for prompt legislative action.

As federal ideas for workplace raids, mass detentions, and amendments to birthright citizenship gather traction, CAIR-NJ’s call to action underscores the mounting unease among immigrant communities.
