CANTON, OHTAfter a dramatic, months-long search, two youngsters who went missing from Ohio in October have been located in Iceland. Before officials eventually found them in Reykjavk earlier this month, their mother—who apparently stopped taking her prescribed mental health medication—had moved them across many nations.

Children Vanish After Mother s Alleged Mental Health Struggles

The case started on October 25, 2024, when the Canton Police Department received a missing persons complaint for two children, ages eight and nine. Alarms were raised because the kids were no longer going to school.

Around the same time the children vanished, authorities think the 34-year-old mother of the children stopped taking her medicine and left her apartment.

The U.S. Marshals Service joined the search as worries about their safety grew.

A Journey to a Remote Icelandic Village

Before a trail of travel documents revealed a trip to London, England, early leads led the family to Denver, Colorado. They then traveled to the little island of Jersey in the English Channel.

When authorities learned that the woman and her kids had visited Iceland, the investigation took an unexpected turn. Although they made their home in a secluded fishing community, officials were able to track them down at a hotel in the capital city of Reykjav.

The children were placed in the custody of Iceland’s social services while their mother was in the hospital thanks to the prompt action of Icelandic police.

The mother will stay in the Icelandic hospital until she was stable enough to travel back to the United States, officials said. Social services took care of the kids in the meantime until a reliable relative could take them home.

U.S. Authorities Recover the Children

The children were successfully retrieved on January 10 by the U.S. Marshals Service in close coordination with the State Department. Their family was relieved at the conclusion of the three-month-long case, which took place in multiple foreign countries.

“The collaboration of effort in this case can’t be understated,” said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott, who lauded the teamwork engaged. Responding to and recovering these kids overseas is a very challenging task. Our investigators performed exceptionally well. We are fortunate to have law enforcement partners who are so committed and strong, and they deserve recognition for their role in bringing these kids home.

Although authorities have not provided more information regarding the mother’s health or the family’s present circumstances, the case has garnered attention due to its complexity and global reach.
