CAB, SAN CLEMENTEPatrol officers stopped a major drug smuggling effort on California’s Interstate 5 and found a secret stash of lethal drugs worth almost $300,000. The dramatic operation, which took place on January 10 close to San Clemente, highlights the continuous fight against drug trafficking along one of the nation’s busiest highways.

Suspicious Vehicle Stopped by Alert Agents

Agents on patrol on I-5 at the Basilone Road exit south of San Clemente spotted a car acting strangely at around 10:30 a.m. Agents started a traffic stop after the driver’s actions and manner raised suspicions.

A K-9 squad was sent to the location right away. A thorough search of the car was initiated after the well-trained dog indicated the presence of drugs.

Agents found many packages hidden in the car’s natural cavities, which is a frequent way for narcotics smugglers to avoid detection.

Seized Drugs Worth Over $297,000

22 parcels containing a variety of hazardous materials were found during the search, which produced an astounding haul.

34.4 pounds of fentanyl, 5.1 pounds of heroin, and 11.1 pounds of methamphetamine were found by the agents.

Given that the drugs’ aggregate street worth exceeds $297,000, this bust represents a serious setback to local criminal activity.
