State police investigate smash-and-grab theft from vehicle in Hempfield Township

The Pennsylvania State Police are looking into a smash-and-grab theft that happened in the parking lot of LA Fitness in Hempfield Township on January 7, 2025.

According to the victim, her BMW’s passenger-side window was broken, and a rucksack that held credit cards and personal items was taken. Authorities said the event happened sometime between 9:20 and 11:00 a.m.

The defendant made over $3,000 in illegal transactions at a neighboring Walmart shortly after the crime by using the victim’s stolen credit cards. Within minutes after the transactions, according to state police, the suspect drove off in a black pickup vehicle from the Walmart parking lot.

Troops are still investigating and trying to find the person responsible. Contacting Pennsylvania State Police is advised for anyone with information regarding the incident.

The event brings to light the rising number of car thefts that target public parking spaces.
