Glasgow, Delaware. Fidel Villatoro-Martinez, 28, of Newark, has been taken into custody by Delaware State Police in relation to a two-vehicle collision that occurred Tuesday evening and resulted in one man’s death and another’s injuries. According to investigators, the crash, which happened at the intersection of DE-896 and Pulaski Highway, was caused by alcohol and a red-light infraction.
On January 21, 2025, at around 10:39 p.m., a 2004 Chevrolet Express van driven by Villatoro-Martinez collided with a 2019 Dodge Ram that was heading south on DE-896 with a green light. The Dodge was struck by the van as it entered the intersection on a red signal while heading west on Pulaski Highway.
David Funk, 51, of Centreville, Maryland, was the driver of the Dodge. He was taken to a nearby hospital with severe injuries, and the next day he passed away. A 16-year-old Dodge passenger was hospitalized after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
Due to injuries he received in the collision, Villatoro-Martinez was sent to a hospital. Troopers noticed that he had alcohol containers in his car and that his breath smelled like alcohol. After an investigation, Villatoro-Martinez was charged with DUI, driving without a valid license, failing to stop at a red light, first-degree vehicular assault (a felony), second-degree vehicular assault, and other traffic crimes.
While more charges about the death are still pending, he is being jailed on a $3,500 secured bond after being arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11.
The event is still being looked into by the Delaware State Police.
