A U.S. citizen was shot in the leg during the brutal assault, and both hikers had their possessions stolen. There are new worries about safety in this remote, rocky region after officials say the attackers fled back across the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Attack in Broad Daylight
Just 1,000 feet north of the U.S.-Mexico border, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers received a gunfire alert at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Agents from the responding Border Patrol came upon a group of hikers, two of whom had suffered severe injuries.
The victims, a Canadian and a U.S. citizen, allegedly came into contact with the armed men who demanded that they comply with their requests. The American hiker was hurt when the assailants opened fire when the hikers refused. Before leaving the area, the armed guys took the hikers’ backpacks and cell phones.
Rescue Efforts
The injured hiker was swiftly rescued by CBP’s specialist units. After arriving on the site, agents from the Mountain Disrupt Unit, Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR), and Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) collaborated to stabilize the casualty.
As CBP Air and Marine Operations sent a chopper to remove the injured person, agents set up a protective perimeter by 12:08 p.m. For additional care, the hiker was transported by Reach Air Ambulance to Sharp Medical Center in San Diego.
Pursuit of the Assailants
Agents from BORTAC and BORSTAR followed the alleged cartel members to the border after the attack, where the attackers fled into Mexico.
Gregory Bovino, the sector chief for El Centro, issued a statement denouncing the incident. According to Bovino, the injured hiker is a “I told you so” moment emphasizing the value of proper infrastructure, which the Border Patrol has been promoting for years.
However, suspected terrorists from the cartels are preparing to discover that this kind of behavior will be an end-game action in the Premier Sector. Every threat in this area, no matter where it occurs or when, will be firmly countered.
