Authorities claim that a mother in Grand Rapids, Michigan, intentionally set her house on fire while her three children were inside, resulting in the untimely death of her 12-year-old daughter. The mother is now facing significant charges. According to the prosecution, the woman removed all seven smoke alarms before dousing the residence in lighter fluid and starting the fire in an effort to cause the most destruction possible. The horrific event has shocked the town and left a bereaved family in shock.
Fire Engulfs Home After Smoke Detectors Are Removed
Roconda Singleton, 46, is accused by investigators of methodically taking out each smoke detector in her Grand Rapids house before burning it on Saturday.
Emergency personnel raced to the site, fighting a fierce fire as the house quickly caught fire. Despite the efforts of over 40 firefighters from 13 different units, the damage had already been done.
The 10-year-old daughter of Singleton, who lived, has come forward to say that she feels her mother should be imprisoned for all time for what transpired.
As others frantically attempted to flee, the small girl explained how her mother refused to leave her burning bedroom. She also recalled that Singleton would not divulge the site of her older sister’s captivity, so she had to lead rescuers there herself.
Police Discover Chilling Evidence in the Backyard
Suspicions that the fire was started on purpose were confirmed when authorities found a bag in the backyard that contained all seven smoke detectors.
It is almost impossible for Singleton’s children to escape unharmed, according to investigators, because she soaked furniture in lighter fluid before starting the fire.
Singleton is currently being charged with several counts of second-degree child abuse and first-degree arson. She might be imprisoned for the rest of her life if found guilty.
