WAUKEGAN A woman was discovered dead on the roof of a nearby medical facility, sparking a startling case of negligence in Waukegan, Illinois. Hypothermia has been confirmed by authorities as the cause of death. Serious concerns regarding security and hospital management were raised by the fact that the woman’s body was left out in the cold overnight. Investigators are currently looking into how a patient may disappear from a hospital designed to keep her safe.
Death on the Rooftop: Timeline of Events
About 4 a.m. last Wednesday, 28-year-old Chelsea Adolphus was taken to Vista Medical Center for alcohol treatment. She was reported missing from her room at 2 a.m. on Thursday. She was just wearing a medical gown when she was found dead on the hospital’s roof seven hours later, in subfreezing weather.
According to Jennifer Banek of the Lake County Coroner’s Office, Adolphus’ body temperature had fallen to about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. At 11 p.m., medical personnel fought for 14 hours to reheat her and do resuscitation, but she was declared dead. Ten minutes later, the coroner’s office received the alarm.
Autopsy and Toxicology Pending as Investigation Heats Up
Although toxicology findings are still pending, an autopsy performed on Friday confirmed hypothermia as the cause of death.
Banek said that a formal investigation was started after her office informed Waukegan police about what she called “unusual circumstances surrounding the death.”
According to Banek, my office has sent a preservation letter to American Healthcare Systems and the Vista Medical leadership team, guaranteeing that no paper, video, digital, or electronic evidence is erased, rewritten, or destroyed.
Alarming Security Lapses and Prior Warnings
Banek publicly attacked the hospital’s parent firm and management during a press conference.
She disclosed that employees neglected to report Adolphus’ disappearance to the police. Furthermore, a second-floor entrance leading to the roof automatically latched after use, and hospital doors lacked alarms.
Only after being spotted on the roof by the relatives of another patient was Adolphus located.
Banek also said that she had previously voiced concerns regarding the hospital’s functioning, claiming that it was dangerously understaffed. She said that 69 sitters, or patient monitors, had been placed on furlough.
According to Banek, Waukegan and the neighboring towns need safe, high-quality healthcare, and American Healthcare Systems must be held responsible for this.
It has consistently failed to pay its debts to clinical providers, vendors, and the City of Waukegan for its water bill, in addition to $1 million in overdue taxes.
Family Left Devastated by Contradictory Hospital Accounts
Paul Adolphus, the brother of Adolphus, complained about the hospital’s contradictory statements. He described how his sister had put her trust in the hospital to help her heal during the same press appearance.
According to Paul Adolphus, she came here because she had faith in Waukegan Vista Hospital to help her recover from her alcohol addiction.
That my sister’s life was in their hands is unfair.
Authorities are anticipated to examine staff procedures, video surveillance, and any possible carelessness that may have contributed to Adolphus’ death as investigations proceed.
