The girls’ life hung in the balance as strong seas closed in, but they were saved by quick-thinking rescuers.
Stranded in the Middle of Iao Stream
The girls were stranded on a rocky outcrop in the Iao Stream when the Maui County Fire Department received an urgent call.
Rainfall caused the water to rise quickly, transforming the stream into a torrent. The girls were clinging to the rocky island, unable to flee as the current roared around them, when firefighters arrived on the scene.
A Helicopter Lifeline
The only lifeline available to the stranded girls was the swift deployment of a helicopter crew.
The team saved them from what might have been a disastrous outcome by lifting them to safety one by one. As the girls waited for help beside a tiny waterfall, the fire department posted video footage of the dramatic scene, which showed the waters smashing by.
Warning of More Danger Ahead
With more rain predicted in the days ahead, the fire department warned of the ongoing risk of flash floods. Authorities issued a warning that floods could happen suddenly and without warning.
According to the fire department, flooding in streams, gulches, and drainages can occur even when it isn’t raining where you are.
Because the weather is still unpredictable, locals have been asked to exercise caution.
