When commotion broke out, the plane carrying more than 100 passengers was rolling down the runway at Houston, Texas’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), necessitating an emergency evacuation.

Terrifying Fire Halts Takeoff

The FAA reports that just after 8:30 a.m., United Airlines Flight 1382, an Airbus A320 headed for New York, was speeding up for departure when a reported engine problem caused a fire.

Fearful, the passengers fled onto the runway in response to the unexpected incident. As flames consumed a portion of the plane’s wing and brought the aircraft to a complete stop, video footage showed terrified screaming.

Buses were promptly dispatched by authorities to take people from the runway to the terminal. Five crew members and 104 passengers were on board when the incident occurred.

Emergency Response and Evacuation

Firefighters from Houston quickly arrived to assist with the evacuation. The anxious moments when people escaped were characterized as chaotic, but there were no reported injuries.
