ST. PAUL, MNA As local officials clamped down on an escalating drug problem and violent crime spree, a huge sting operation in St. Paul, Minnesota, resulted in a wave of arrests Tuesday, apprehending 12 individuals. A guy accused of murder in a deadly October shooting was among those arrested, shocking the neighborhood as information about the bust surfaced.
Operation Cold Front, which focused on fentanyl trafficking, was the outcome of a three-month investigation that sought to dismantle networks associated with drug-related violence.
Four of the fentanyl trafficking-related arrests indicate the efforts made by law enforcement to contain a crisis that killed 180 people in Ramsey County last year. Since fentanyl overdoses are now the leading cause of overdose deaths in the area, immediate action is required.
Murder Charges Linked to Deadly Robbery
The arrest of 20-year-old Kastedell Larmarr Thomas Jr., who was charged with killing 42-year-old Nicholas Sletten during an attempted robbery, was one of the most terrifying.
The criminal complaint claims that on October 14, Sletten took Thomas Jr. and four other people to a Speedway petrol station. However, what started off as a typical ride swiftly descended into mayhem.
In what investigators say was an effort to rob Sletten, Thomas Jr. and another passenger allegedly pulled out weapons after leaving the petrol station. According to reports, Thomas Jr. shot Sletten before he and the others ran away, abandoning their victim in the violent sequence of events.
Just about 9:30 p.m., Sletten was discovered lying close to his car at Jackson Street and Wheelock Parkway. Despite the quick response of rescue personnel, Sletten’s life was lost. He was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
Coordinated Sting by Multiple Crime Units
The widespread arrests on Tuesday weren’t made at random. The St. Paul Police Department’s specialist squads, including the Narcotics, Gang, Criminal Investigations, and Special Investigations sections, collaborated on the case. The success of the operation was also greatly aided by the Ramsey County Violent Crimes Enforcement Team.
