OCEANSIDE, CA A lethal drug, a California party that became a nightmare, and a heartbreaking death This is the tale of a former US Marine who, after being implicated in a fellow Marine’s fentanyl overdose, entered a guilty plea. The military community was rocked by the catastrophic loss that resulted from what started as a pill search.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing Details
The 24-year-old Anthony Ruben Whisenant acknowledged using his telephone to set up a heroin deal that resulted in his fellow Marine, L.M., overdosing and dying.
The plea was confirmed by the Central District of California U.S. Attorney’s Office. Whisenant will now be sentenced on May 7 and might spend up to four years behind bars.
The Deadly Encounter: Fentanyl Disguised as Oxycodone
According to court records, Whisenant served as an active-duty lance corporal at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California, in May 2020.
He looked for what he thought were oxycodone pills for L.M. during this period. However, the pills included fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that is frequently used in overdose instances.
Whisenant used a Snapchat ad to connect with the 28-year-old drug dealer, Gustavo Jaciel Solis. Whisenant and another Marine, Ryan Douglas White, 27, were driven by L.M. to Solis to collect the drugs.
Once the drugs were secured, the group went to a Compton party.
The Night of the Overdose
L.M. took the pills during the party without realizing they included fentanyl. Sadly, he passed away shortly after consuming them.
Before first responders could come, Whisenant ordered White to flush the remaining pills down a toilet as panic struck.
Drug Ring Unraveled: Multiple Arrests and Charges
Not alone Whisenant was subject to legal repercussions.
Solis was charged in relation to a narcotics network along with two civilians, Jessica Sarah Perez, 25, of Pacoima, and Jordan Nicholas McCormick, 29, of Palmdale. After the event, White was charged as an accessory.
Solis entered a guilty plea in April 2022 to charges of supplying fentanyl that caused death and taking part in a narcotics trafficking conspiracy. Although a date has not yet been set, he could receive a sentence of life in jail.
White acknowledged his guilt in December 2024 as well. Knowing about the fatal narcotics trade and trying to thwart the inquiry, he entered a guilty plea to misprision of a felony. White will be sentenced on June 6 and might spend up to three years in prison.
Authorities Sound the Alarm on Fentanyl
Speaking about the larger issue, Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph McNally stated, “Fentanyl continues to claim the lives of too many in our community.” Our office is still dedicated to prosecuting individuals who are endangering the health and safety of our communities by distributing fentanyl and other harmful drugs throughout our district.
Given the severe repercussions of drug-related offenses, the legal decisions in this case will determine the destiny of individuals involved.
