Missouri and Illinois are likely to get heavy rain on Saturday, primarily along and south of I-44 in Missouri and I-55 in Illinois. As the system moves out late Saturday, light snow can fall. There will probably be very little accumulation.
After the storm, temperatures will drop sharply, and an arctic air mass will move into the Midwest from February 18 to 22, according to the St. Louis-based National Weather Service (NWS). Temperatures north of and along I-70 might drop below freezing.
The NWS advises citizens to check on those who are at risk and winterize pipes. Conditions will be dangerous because overnight lows will probably be far below average. Even brief exposure to extremely cold temperatures might be harmful.
The forecast has an 80–90% confidence level, with central Illinois and northern Missouri having the highest risk. Residents should be ready for ice conditions, higher heating demands, and possible traffic interruptions.
