Central New York Braces for a Foot of Snow as Lake Effect Snow Machine Fires Up

Binghamton, New York: A strong lake effect snowstorm is expected to dump more than a foot of snow on central New York, resulting in hazardous driving conditions and complete sight loss.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning is in force for Onondaga, Madison, and Oneida counties from 4 p.m. tonight until 1 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Binghamton National Weather Service (NWS). Roads might become dangerous and almost impossible to traverse at times due to snowfall speeds that could surpass two inches per hour.

Forecasters caution that cold weather and strong winds will cause the snow machine to crank up overnight and last until Friday. Road closures and travel delays are probable, and drifting and blowing snow adds to the dangers. Even more extensive snowfall is anticipated on Saturday night as a result of another storm system.

Residents should get ready for harsh winter weather. During periods of heavy snowfall, officials advise drivers to avoid the roads and to check weather.gov/bgm for up-to-date information.
