North Carolina Braces for Hazardous Winter Weather: Snow and Ice Impacting Travel Through Thursday

Raleigh, North Carolina From Wednesday morning through Thursday, a winter storm is expected to deliver significant amounts of snow, ice, and sleet to central and northern North Carolina, which could result in dangerous travel conditions and power outages.

Raleigh’s National Weather Service reports that a Winter Storm Warning is still in force from Wednesday at 7 a.m. to Thursday at 10 a.m. The largest levels of snow and sleet are predicted to be found close to the Virginia border, with accumulations ranging from 1 to 6 inches. In certain places, especially in the space between the US-64 and I-40 corridors, ice buildup could exceed a quarter of an inch.

Person, Granville, Vance, Warren, Halifax, Franklin, Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, and Wayne are among the counties that are included in the alert. The worst effects are anticipated from Wednesday afternoon through the night, which could make commuting risky on Wednesday nights and Thursday mornings. In impacted locations, ice buildup may result in power outages and damaged trees.

If at all possible, drivers are advised to avoid traveling. Authorities advise keeping an emergency kit with food, drink, and a flashlight in case driving is required. By dialing 511, one may keep an eye on the state of the roads.

As temperatures stay below freezing through Thursday, locals should be ready for possible power outages and exercise caution when driving on slippery roadways.
